Up bright and early this morning for soccer pictures (8:00am) and our first game (9:00am). It’s amazing how quickly fall has arrived… I feel like we were just doing this a few weeks ago.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this team this year. Sidra and a few of the other girls had obviously moved up from 1st grade to 2nd grade and so I figured they would have made major strides (the difference athletically between 1st and 2nd grade is enormous… in fact, I have to believe, at least when girls are concerned, it’s probably the biggest gap they have) and I was right. All of the 1st graders I had last year had improved significantly over last year… and the other 2nd graders are good as well. Maybe just as importantly, our 1st graders are all players too. I think I had a much wider spectrum of girls last year (some really good, some not so much), this year I don’t have any superstars… but I also don’t have anyone who struggles.
Anyway, in the first half today we looked like it was, well, the first game of the year. In the second half, the Divas (yes, our team has chosen to be named after our Airedale who they all met yesterday at practice!) flipped the switch, pouring in four goals to win 4-0. The big surprise was Angelina, conceivably the smallest girl on our team, who scored twice and has a motor that doesn’t quit.
So it looks like we may have another successful soccer season ahead of us… although week 2 pits us against the team I think is probably the best in the league (if it’s not us) so we’ll have to see.
Yea soccer!
